Temperate Storm Willa

No- it's not a tantrum. It's the unreasonably powerful storm that ruined our Whitaker Festival concert at the Missouri Botanical Garden. As soon as we got our blanket and snacks organized we were warned over the P.A. that their was an "event" moving in and might want to hold on tight. About 10 minutes later we were told more emphatically that shelter was not a suggestion. With that, winds rushed in from the Northeast on a cusion of dust. People began scurrying to and fro as branches and boughs cracked. We saw several near misses and one dead-on hit. After an hour in the safety of the Kemper Garden Center we picked our way through the debris to the main enterance. The surreal atmosphere of the branch-filled, lightless streets on the way back to grandma's house capped a very interesting evening.
Today we had another storm called by one weather forecaster, "a very severe, severe thunderstorm". Rather than just adding another severe I think it should be called a temperate storm because its not in the tropics. Since it is coined by your's truely, it should of course be called "Temperate Storm Willa".
Hopefully Temperate Storm season is over since tomorrow is the Festival of Nations. The weather is supposed to be much cooler tomorrow. Come down to Tower Grove Park for an old-fashioned (no electricity) good time.
