Birthday Month 2017

It's December and that means it's my birthday month! Yeah!
Happy 13th birthday to me.
Happy 13th birthday to me!

Traditional birthday morning photos. I was pretty tired this morning and it shows. When I first started school at St. Margaret, we used to not have school on my birthday on account of it being a holy day of obligation. But, in more recent years, the parish priest felt it was better if we all stayed in school and went to mass together.

Got these birthday gifts from my Aunt Tracy and cousins in Bloomington, Illinois. And, I'm wearing my cool Riverdale shirt, which was one of the birthday gifts from my parents.

Same gifts, just in front of our Christmas tree.  My parents used to wait until after my birthday before we decorated for Christmas, you know, to make my birthday seem more special. But, this year, for some reason that I don't recall now, we decided to put our Christmas tree up early. I'm glad that we did. It's so pretty! And, I really enjoyed having the extra holiday joy.

Maybe all that extra joy is why I felt so inspired to make these Christmas corn flake wreaths and holiday sweaters.

We're back at Babcia's for Christmas Eve .......

and Christmas Day.

Earlier that morning though, my Dad and I were checking out the new keyboard that I got for Christmas.

Guess I figured it out, 'cause it looks I'm rockin'!

Still playing ......

Cuba 2017

Our family vacation in 2017 was to Cuba. We were there for 15 days and spent time in Havana, Vinales, Playa Larga, Santa Clara, and Trinidad -- and that's only like 1/2 the island! Guess we'll have to go back again someday! It was a lot of fun - vivid, lush, colors, beautiful music, rich history, and extremely friendly people.  Most of the photos that we took were of the landscape so there aren't a lot of me but here are a few from the trip.

Leaving from the St. Louis airport.

We stayed in AirBnB's the whole time we were in Cuba, which is pretty standard. For about $3-5 extra you could have breakfast in most places. Here's me eating my first Cuban breakfast in Havana. Let's just say that I was not a big fan of breakfast foods in Cuba.

After we arrived in Cuba, we spent the first day and night in Havana. We had pre-arranged a taxi colectivos (a shared taxi) to take us to Vinales, which is about a 3 hour drive. All the taxi colectivos are those old American or Soviet 1950s or 60s cars so it was kinda cool to get to ride in one of those, until it was so jammed packed full of people and luggage!

On our first night in Vinales, Cuba we had dinner on the rooftop of our AirBnB.

We also took a horse carriage ride through the Valle de Vinales. The Valle de Vinales is known for its farmland, especially for its coffee and tobacco fields/plantations. You can see the Sierra de los Organos and mogotes behind me in the photo. We toured a traditional farming methods, a tobacco farm (where we learned how tobacco is grown and cigars are made), and saw the Mural of Prehistory.

One afternoon we went to scenic Los Jazmines Hotel to go swimming.

After a few days in Vinales, we took another taxi colectivos to Playa Larga. Playa Larga is at the head of the Bahia de Cochinos, or as we say in English, Bay of Pigs. My Mom is a History teacher so it was super important to her that we stop here. In fact, this whole trip was super important to her.

For the third leg of the trip, we went to Trinidad. The AirBnB that we stayed in here had a second story rooftop porch for relaxing and dining. It also had a 3rd story pigeon aviary where the family kept homing pigeons that they released everyday. Me and Dad are descending the staircase, here, after having spent some time looking at the pigeons.

Sugar plantations were once a major cash crop in Trinidad so there are plenty of things sugar-related to visit in the area - historic mills, plantations, missions, and other things related to the sugar industry. Here I am posing in the bell tower at the Manaca-Iznaga Sugar Plantation and Mill. It was really high up and it was really windy as you can see.

We also went the this sugar museum near the Manaca-Iznaga Sugar Plantation and Mill. Our guide was telling us about Cuba's role in the history of sugar. He was also showing us this sugar cane that still grew on the property.

We did so many things in and around Havana, Vinales, Playa Larga, and Trinidad that aren't shown in the photos here. My Mom took almost 1000 photos! But, mostly not of us so you'll just have to trust me when I tell you that it really was such a fun trip! So, so, so many great memories.

Braces in 2017!

My then-dentist decided that the time had finally come for me to consult with an orthodontist. My Mom sorted through the various recommendations, picked one she liked, and made an appointment for me in June for a consultation. When we got there, I was excited but nervous.

After all photos were snapped and assessment was completed, my orthodontist talked to my Mom about my treatment plan and sent us on our way. We would begin treatment in August after we were back from vacation.

In August, I got spacers to prepare my teeth for my bottom braces.

In September, I got my bottom braces put on first. I wore these for a couple of months before they put my top braces on.

In November, I went in for one of my now monthly check ups. I still have my braces but I'm nearing the end of my treatment.

Uncle John's Wedding May 2017

My Uncle John got married in May 2017, over Memorial Day weekend, to my, now, Aunt Emily. They asked me to be their flower girl. Of course, I said yes. This was actually my second time being a flower girl. When I was three, my Uncle Joe and Aunt Lauren asked me, along with my cousins Hanna and Elise, to be their flower girl. My cousin David was the ring bearer. You can see our performance here.

At the rehearsal, the night before. Uncle John is wearing the plaid shirt. Aunt Emily's sister is standing next to me on the right.

Daddy Daughter Dance March 2017

It's another odd-numbered year, which means it's another Daddy Daughter Dance at my school. These are from my 6th grade year. So, counting backwards, my Dad and I have attended Daddy Daughter Dances in these grades: 6th, 4th, 2nd, and Kindergarten. My last one will be this year, my 8th grade year.... so sad. Well, that was until my Dad told me yesterday that the high school that I hope to attend has Daddy Daughter Dances, too! Holy cow! 4 more years!

2017 In Review

Another year, more stuff to document! It's pretty interesting how much we do that is the same from year to year, especially the things that get photographed. I'm probably boring everyone to death with the, "Here's me on St. Patrick's Day" and "Here's me on Halloween" but I guess, at least judging by these photos, that's all we do!

March 2017: My usual St. Patrick's Day at Babcia's photo shoot. This time, my Mom made a collage of the photos so she could post it on Instagram.

March 2017: The Orchid Show at the Missouri Botanical Garden

April 2017: Getting ready to play my two violin pieces at the Missouri Federation Music Festival at St. Charles Community College. This was the first time that I participated and I was pretty nervous!

April 2017: Easter Sunday at Babcia's. My egg hunt goodies and a plateful of edible flowers.

May 2017: Some "Red Nose" shenanigans on Memorial Day at Babcia's. We also celebrated my Dad's birthday.

May 2017: My school choir performed at the 7th inning stretch at Busch Stadium. After the game was over, my Dad and I tried to recreate a photo that was taken at a Cardinals game when I was younger. I'll try and find the photo and, if I do, I'll update the post for comparison purposes.

July 2017: We went to Fair St. Louis this year. It was held at Forest Park since they were renovating the St. Louis Arch grounds. I'm posing with this enormous American flag that was being held by two fire trucks.

October 2017: Clara and I had our pictures taken again by Alexandria Mooney Photography (formerly Pics and Paws Photography). We had Alex do them last year for the first time and they turned out so awesome that we decided to do them every year!

October 2017: My friends and I decided to dress as old time movie stars this year for Halloween. I went as Marilyn Monroe. I'm all ready to head out here except that it was like a million degrees below zero so I also had to wear a trench coat. So, no one really got to see my costume.

November 2017: Here's me and my Dad and the annual Holiday Train Show at the Missouri Botanical Garden. I love this Christmas tree made entirely of poinsettias!

November 2017: My family went to the Open House at Nerinx Hall High School, which is where I want to go to high school next year. We found out that they were performing Beauty and the Beast for their fall musical so I really wanted to go. My Mom got tickets so I got my first Nerinx Hall theatre experience! It was sooo goood! And an SMOS alumni was in the ensemble...... bonus!

November 2017: My family went to the St. Louis Symphony. It was our regular symphony night and, unfortunately, I don't recall what we saw. I'm sure that it was good. And, I'm sure that I dozed off.

November 2017: Family selfie at Thanksgiving at Babcia's.
