Glacier National Park: Family Vacation 2015

As you can tell from my previous posts, my family likes road trips and we like spending time in nature, especially vacationing in our National Parks. Our destination this year was Glacier National Park but, like last year, we made some stops along the way.

Our first stop was the Pony Express Museum in St. Joseph, Missouri. The Pony Express mail service ran for about 18 months from St. Joseph to Sacramento, California.
I don't remember where we spent the first night of our trip but my Mom knows that if I'm going to have to do camping, that she better find some hotels with pools along the way!
The fun stop was just outside Badlands National Park at the Badlands Ranch Store. Here you'll find a 6-ton concrete prairie dog. And, a field full of regular-but-a-little-on-the-chubby-from-all-those-peanuts-size prairie dogs.
Here were are in Badlands National Park, taking in the beautiful scenery.

For the next couple of nights we stayed at the Chief Motel in Custer, South Dakota. Obviously, they had a pool.
One of first big stops was to a place that most people recognize: Mount Rushmore. Why was I so serious in this photo? I couldn't tell you now but judging the seriousness of the faces behind me on that mountain, I was probably trying to compete!
After Mount Rushmore, we visited the Crazy Horse monument (above). Not only is its subject famous but to us Polish folks so is its sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski. Though the monument remains unfinished today, it is rather impressive, almost more so than Mount Rushmore. You can also see the Nature Gates at Crazy Horse.
You really can't tell from this photo but I'm posing at the base of Devil's Tower
Resting at a scenic overlook in Custer State Park in Custer, South Dakota. Custer State Park is a special place for my parents because that's where they got engaged. Besides being beautiful country and having lots to see and do in the area that's the main reason that we stayed in Custer as long as we did. It has sentimental value.
Last night in the pool! Next stop, Glacier National Park. But not before staying the night in one of the worst motels. Ever. But I guess every trip has to have one of these stories. In the middle of nowhere, no amenities, only food available were a couple of gross, leathery hot dogs from the only gas station in town, shoddy internet/phone, well, I could go on....but I won't. Instead, I present the Corral Motel in Harlowtown, Montana and a few reviews.
At least we had a good story!

Then, we finally rolled into Glacier NP were we camped at the Fresh Creek Campground for the week. I got to business right away.
Hammock Inspector! Just making sure that the hammock worked properly.
Lake Inspector: Making sure that Lake McDonald would meet all of needs for the week.
Scenic. Check. Cold. Check. Light crowds. Check.
Campfire Inspector: Yep, we have the skills to make a campfire.

These were some of the activities that we did during the week at least once.
Snorkeling and exploring in Lake McDonald.
Hiking and looking for wildlife in McGee's Meadow.
Hiking to and wading in the Middle Fork Flathead River.
Hiking. This happens to be on the Rocky Pointe Trail.
Hiking to and wading in the St. Mary's River.
Hiking up to Grinnell Glacier and wading in Grinnell Lake.
Campfire shenanigans: soot mustache.
And, finally, on the way home, visiting Wall Drug in Wall, South Dakota.
